Description
For sale is an absolutely stunning late 80's rocket Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra with full Dura Ace 7400 group + amazing custom Nuke Proof/Mavic wheelset. This is a 1989 model in the Team Domex Weinmann colors. Serial number is L4X B4931 which implies it was build by employee "L", is a 54cm frame (the 4), SLX tubeset (the X), B implies 1988-1990 build run, and 4931 is midway through that run of 9999 frames so likely built in 1989. I can send you a screen shot of the 1989 catalog which has a bike in this colorway as well. What is the history of the bike? I purchased it from the original owner's estate so am the second owner. He bought it new in 1989 and rode it for several years. It's been ridden with some scratches and imperfections, but overall amazing condition for being 32 years old. It's very clean, never been crashed, and mechanically sound. Everything is original on the bike as I bought it, with the exception of the brake calipers (came with Shimano 600, I replaced with Dura Ace 7402 of exact vintage to match rest of group), saddle (he had a newer one on there, I replaced with a correct vintage San Marco Concor Supercorsa, Stem (he had a super long 140mm Cinelli 1A, I replaced with much more reasonable length 120mm Cinelli XA of same vintage), and Tires (much better looking brand new Terravail Tan/Black 700x28cm which looks period correct, I will include Continental Grand Prix reflective sidewall tires that came with the bike as well). I bought it to look at, but have so many other projects so this needs to go. I've ridden it a few times and it rides like a dream!
Build details:
Frame: Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra, Size 54. Columbus SLX tubing. Top Tube C-C measures 55cm, and Seat tube C-C measures 54cm. I am 5'9" and ride 54-55 top tube bikes and it fits true to size and good for me.
Shifters: Dura Ace 7402 down tube 7 speed
Derailleurs: Dura Ace 7402
Cassette: Dura Ace 12-21t 7 speed
Crankset: Dura Ace 7402, 39/53
Brakes: Dura Ace 7402 with original Dura Ace 7402 pads
Brake Levers: Shimano Super SLR aero
Headset: Dura Ace
Seatpost: Dura Ace
Saddle: San Marco Concor Supercorsa (amazing condition, leather is nearly perfect and rails are shiny)
Stem: Cinelli XA, 120mm, 26.4mm clamp
Handlebar: Cinelli 66, 44cm size.
Wheels: Super rare and amazing looking Nuke Proof hubs (primo late 80's/early 90's US based manufacturer making super high end stuff - Carbon fiber shells + I believe they have titanium axles although do not know how to verify this), mounted to Mavic Open 4 CD rims, Double butted wheelsmith spokes, color matched to the bike blue and yellow alternating spoke nipples. If I had to guess these were probably built a year or two after the bike was purchased, although they were obviously purpose built for this bike with the color matched spoke nipples, unfortunately I do not know the story behind them. They are true, hub bearings roll smoothly.
Tires: Currently have 700x28 Teravail Rampart brown/black tires mounted, purchased purely for looks, only have about 20 miles on them. I will include the 700x25 Continental GP tires that came with the bike, although they have reflective sidewalls so I didn't like how they looked.
Bar Tape: Brand new white cork tape.
I will have the bike professionally boxed and will ship UPS or Fedex Ground, or even better will happily arrange a local pickup in the Minneapolis, MN area. Please note that I will need ~2 business days to ship properly after purchase as I also have it listed locally and do not want to box unless it's sold. Thanks!
